ANTONIO NARIÑO (1765-1824) WAS AN ARISTOCRATIC COLOMBIAN BORN REVOLUTIONARY WHO WAS AN EARLY PROPONENT, AGITATOR AND LEADER AGAINST SPANISH RULE OF NEW GRANADA (COLOMBIA).
IN 1811 HE BECAME PRESIDENT OF ONE OF THE INDEPENDENT STATES THAT HAD BROKEN AWAY FROM SPAIN.
AS COMMANDER AND GENERAL OF REPUBLICAN FORCES, HE WON INITIAL VICTORIES AGAINST THE ROYALISTS, DRIVING OFF AN INVASION, UNTIL THE COLLAPSE OF HIS FORCES AND HIS SURRENDER. FROM 1814-1821 HE WAS INTERRED IN A ROYAL PRISON.
HE WAS MADE VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE GREATER REPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA BY BOLIVAR AND WAS RECOGNIZED AS A NATIONAL HERO OF COLOMBIA BEFORE HIS DEATH IN 1824.
THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN COLOMBIA WAS BUILT ON THE SPOT OF HIS BIRTHPLACE AND IS NAMED CASA DE NARIÑO.
